Identity: In the Fall of 2015 I noticed a significant shift in my work. For several months I had been experimenting with a friend using spray and peeling layers with water pressure, which really created a dynamic and expressive visual. I had also spent years trying to hone my ability to draw and paint gesturally, wanting to capture the nuances of human emotion and relationships through expressive forms, movements, and interactions...my goal was to allow my process to be a natural expression of my emotions and perceptions in the moment...to capture the essence of time and place.
In the Fall of 2015 my time and place was filled with political upheaval and extremism, rapid technological advancement and cultural change...(it has only intensified since then.) It struck me that I was getting to live through perhaps one of the most amazing and terrifying times in human history. Never before have we been so capable of creation and destruction all at the same time. I was (and am) deeply affected and motivated by what I observe in the socio-political times we are living in. I am genuinely concerned for the future of humanity, and at the same time I am incredibly excited to see how our story plays out. The work below is my attempt to explore what I see happening in human culture. The power struggles, the anger, the fear, the creation, the destruction, the love, and hate.
For the sake of sharing process, I have attempted to include some of the earlier pieces in this body of work at the bottom...the ones that helped me find my way to this work. The majority of this series was created from Jan. 2016 to present.
